Aunt Beatrice has judged every Christmas tree in the family since 1983. She carries a clipboard. It has columns: Symmetry, Sparkle, Needle Control and Overall Effort. The ivory pattern glowed against the black, the center opening hid the stand, and the fleece lay flat like it had been pressed. The room held its breath. She wrote something down, crossed it out and wrote something else. Then she said, in a voice nobody had heard before, "Well. That is acceptable." Uncle Walt sat down very suddenly, like a man who had just been pardoned.

Acceptable, from Beatrice, is a standing ovation. The black ground swallows the stand, the cords and the sad little water bowl, so the tree seems to grow straight out of a very expensive floor. Gold ribbon looks richer against it. White lights look sharper. Even a crooked tree appears to be leaning on purpose. Aunt Beatrice may still want to adjust the angel, but she will have to do it from a respectful distance, because stepping onto this mat feels like crossing a velvet rope. Wrap the presents in solid colors and let the pattern do the talking.

Carry it to the dinner where the table has place cards and a napkin fold. The host will pretend to be modest and then rearrange the tree that very night. Or send it to the cousin who just bought her first house and keeps saying she wants it to feel grown-up; this is grown-up with a ribbon on it. And if a relative in your family grades trees with a clipboard, mail it early. Early is how you earn an eight.
