Stocking With Attitude

Professor Wren is an archaeologist who retired three years ago and has been quietly furious about it ever since. Without a dig to run, she has taken to excavating her own house: the attic, the basement, the back of the pantry. Each find gets a label. The label usually says, why did we keep this?

For Christmas her nephew gives her a stocking, and she studies it as if it were a fragment of a lost civilization. The flannel is dark gray and brown, covered in aged damask that looks like the pattern on an ancient tomb wall, worn, softened and half erased, with a thick white cuff above it. She hangs it on the mantel and examines it with a magnifying glass. She concludes that it is of recent manufacture, which does not diminish her respect.

On Christmas morning, she finds it full of tiny objects wrapped in tissue: a brass key, a small trowel, a piece of sea glass and a little brush. A card reads, for your next dig. She holds the trowel for a long time. By New Year's, she has organized a neighborhood excavation of the community garden, with seventeen volunteers and a very strict system of labels. The stocking hangs over the fireplace as a symbol of the dig that never ends. If your taste runs toward the time-worn and the mysterious, this dark gray and brown stocking is a solid find: a double-sided damask print, a white cuff and a hanging loop that endures.

Mantel & Stuffing

Hang it from an old stone mantel, a wooden beam or a rustic shelf and let the aged pattern settle in. The dark flannel makes the worn damask look like a relic, and the white cuff adds a clean contrast. The brushed texture feels warm and the loop slides on a nail or hook. Fill it with brass keys, small tools, sea glass, hard candy, a deck of cards or a map. It holds more than it looks like it can, thanks to a medium-weight flannel body that does not slump. The print shows on both sides, so the stocking looks good from any angle, even when it twirls in the draft from the chimney.

Gift Ideas

Give it to the historian in the family who loves old photographs and will hold them to the light before saying anything. Hand it to the aunt who collects old keys and tells stories about every one. Slip it to the neighbor who metal detects on weekends and calls each rusty find a treasure. The stocking suits their curiosity and gives them a place to stash discoveries. A good gift for someone who looks at a trash heap and sees a story, with a plush cuff to keep it from feeling too serious.

Poster/Canvas Care

Care Instructions: Poster

Keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades ink over time. Hang it in a dry room, away from steam and damp. Dust it gently with a soft, dry cloth, and don’t spray or wipe it with liquid. For the longest life, put it under glass in a frame. Handle it by the edges, and store it flat or rolled loosely, never creased.

Care Instructions: Canvas

Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat vents and damp rooms. Dust the surface with a soft, dry cloth or a dry brush. Don’t use water, sprays or cleaners on the print. Hang it on a secure wall mount, and avoid pressing on the front of the canvas. If it’s stored, keep it upright and wrapped in a clean cloth, away from anything that could dent the front.
