Tumbler With Attitude

Vince owns a vintage shop with a flickering neon sign and a crowded back room where old things come to wait for new owners. One slow evening in December he found a box labeled Santa, Do Not Open and, naturally, opened it. Inside was a 1950s Santa face with rosy cheeks, a big red hat and a beard that looked like it had survived three moves and a flood. The face was smiling at him. Vince was fairly sure it winked. He closed the box, opened it again and the wink was still there.

He could not sell the Santa, so he got the next best thing: a tumbler with the same face in two places. The retro Santa beams from the front and back with turquoise stone dots scattered across his beard like tiny jewels, framed by red poinsettias, holly leaves and berries. A snowflake made of the same blue-green stones drifts through the black and white plaid and leopard print that wrap around the sides. Shoppers asked if the Santa winked at them too. Vince said only on days that end in y and refused to elaborate. A teenager bought the neon sign, which Vince took as a sign.

Washing

  • Machine wash at 30°C (86°F) on a gentle cycle.
  • Turn it inside out and wash with like colors.
  • Use mild detergent. Don’t use bleach or fabric softener.
  • Wash dark colors and new pieces separately the first few times.

Drying

  • Tumble dry on low, or hang it to dry.
  • Take it out while it’s still slightly damp to cut down on wrinkles.
  • Don’t dry it on high heat.
  • Iron on low heat, and don’t dry clean.

Keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades ink over time. Hang it in a dry room, away from steam and damp. Dust it gently with a soft, dry cloth, and don’t spray or wipe it with liquid. For the longest life, put it under glass in a frame. Handle it by the edges, and store it flat or rolled loosely, never creased.

Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat vents and damp rooms. Dust the surface with a soft, dry cloth or a dry brush. Don’t use water, sprays or cleaners on the print. Hang it on a secure wall mount, and avoid pressing on the front of the canvas. If it’s stored, keep it upright and wrapped in a clean cloth, away from anything that could dent the front.
