Poppy is seven and runs the best hotel in the house, which has one room, no staff and a very strict front desk. Her guests are a dinosaur, two bears and her father, who was booked in for the weekend without being asked. The hotel is built under a blanket tied to two chairs, and the room numbers are on the ceiling: little red berries scattered across a soft pink field with green leaves and gold stars. Poppy points to them, one by one, and announces her father is in berry number four.

Her father, a man who has sat through three budget meetings today, folds himself under the ceiling and tries to look comfortable. Poppy checks him in with a clipboard made from a cereal box. "Breakfast is at six," she says. "There is no refund." The blanket is warm, the berries glow in the lamp and the hotel is quiet in a way his office never is. He closes his eyes for a minute. Poppy writes a review on the clipboard. It says five stars, will return, snores.

The hotel stays open all winter. The blanket is thick pink fleece, soft enough for the guests and sturdy enough for the staff, and it folds back into a perfectly good throw for the couch when the building comes down. Returns

Washing

  • Machine wash at 30°C (86°F) on a gentle cycle.
  • Turn it inside out and wash with like colors.
  • Use mild detergent. Don’t use bleach or fabric softener.
  • Wash dark colors and new pieces separately the first few times.

Drying

  • Tumble dry on low, or hang it to dry.
  • Take it out while it’s still slightly damp to cut down on wrinkles.
  • Don’t dry it on high heat.
  • Iron on low heat, and don’t dry clean.

Keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades ink over time. Hang it in a dry room, away from steam and damp. Dust it gently with a soft, dry cloth, and don’t spray or wipe it with liquid. For the longest life, put it under glass in a frame. Handle it by the edges, and store it flat or rolled loosely, never creased.

Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat vents and damp rooms. Dust the surface with a soft, dry cloth or a dry brush. Don’t use water, sprays or cleaners on the print. Hang it on a secure wall mount, and avoid pressing on the front of the canvas. If it’s stored, keep it upright and wrapped in a clean cloth, away from anything that could dent the front.
