Snow Globe With Attitude

Dorothy has been postmaster of a small town for thirty years and has one December dilemma that outranks the mail: what to say at the counter. Merry Christmas offends the man who writes letters to the editor. Happy Holidays offends the woman who corrects him. Season's Greetings makes people think she is selling insurance. Last year she said nothing and was accused of coldness. This year she bought a snow globe: a clean white dome covered in green pine sprigs, red bows, dark berries and the words Happy Holidays in gold script repeating across the front.

She set it on the counter beside the stamp scale. The first customer, Mr. Pruitt, glanced at it and said, "Is that a snow globe?" Dorothy said, "It says what I mean." Mr. Pruitt read it. "Happy Holidays," he muttered. "Fair enough." He bought stamps. The next customer, a young mother with three packages, read it aloud to her toddler, who yelled it at the line. The line laughed. By noon Dorothy had said no greetings at all, and the whole post office was full of them.

That is the quiet genius of a snow globe that does the talking: it covers every kind of December with one friendly phrase, in a warm, bright setting that feels like wrapping paper. White, green, red and gold, with just enough glitter to start a conversation and just enough calm to end one. It sits on a counter, a reception desk or a shelf and greets everyone equally. Dorothy has given up saying anything out loud. She says the globe is more diplomatic than any ambassador she has met.

Where It Lives

On a counter or reception desk, where it greets people before you do. A shelf in an entryway uses the same trick, welcoming guests before they have said hello. The white background keeps the message readable from a few feet away, and the gold script glints in lamplight. It also fits a sideboard at a party, where it can serve as a small, shake-friendly host. Set it facing the door. If anyone asks what it says, you have an instant conversation, and if nobody asks, you have still said your piece.

Gift Ideas

Hand it to the shop owner who changes the window display three times in December and still has not chosen a greeting. Hand it to the teacher who writes a card for every student and has a cramped hand to show for it. Hand it to the friend who hosts a mixed-opinion potluck and wants one phrase everybody can live with. Tie it with red ribbon and leave off the card, because the globe is the card. If someone insists on a message, write "See globe."

Poster/Canvas Care

Care Instructions: Poster

Keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades ink over time. Hang it in a dry room, away from steam and damp. Dust it gently with a soft, dry cloth, and don’t spray or wipe it with liquid. For the longest life, put it under glass in a frame. Handle it by the edges, and store it flat or rolled loosely, never creased.

Care Instructions: Canvas

Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat vents and damp rooms. Dust the surface with a soft, dry cloth or a dry brush. Don’t use water, sprays or cleaners on the print. Hang it on a secure wall mount, and avoid pressing on the front of the canvas. If it’s stored, keep it upright and wrapped in a clean cloth, away from anything that could dent the front.
